Managed Backup for VMware - Terminating and reactivating a service
Find out what happens when you terminate a Managed Backup for VMware service, how to restore during the reactivation window and how to have the service reactivated
Objective
You can terminate the protection of an infrastructure at any time. During the reactivation period that follows, you can still restore your data and change your mind.
This guide explains what happens when you terminate a service, and how to have it reactivated.
Requirements
- Have an active Managed Backup for VMware service.
OVHcloud Console Access
- Direct link:
- Navigation path:
Private Cloud>Backup>Managed Backup for VMware
Instructions
What to know before terminating
The 35 days are not a retention period
During the window, your restore points keep expiring according to the retention of their Backup plan. A Standard backup, kept for 14 days, can therefore disappear well before the end of the window. If you need to restore, do it as soon as possible.
- Terminating a service only affects one infrastructure: your other services and your subscription continue as normal.
- The current billing period is billed on what your machines reached before the termination (see Understanding your billing).
Terminating a service
- In the
Dashboardtab, in the Subscription card, clickTerminate a backup service. - In the Terminate a backup service window, choose in the Infrastructure field the one whose protection you want to stop. Only one service is terminated at a time.
- Read the warning: it reminds you what the termination stops, what the reactivation period allows and what happens at its end. Click
Terminateto confirm.
Confirming does not delete anything immediately: the reactivation period starts. A notification confirms that the termination of the backup service for your infrastructure has been recorded.
The termination takes about 20 minutes to process. Your request has been recorded: there is no need to send it again. The service cannot be reactivated during this time.
Once the termination is recorded, you receive an email with the last date on which you can reactivate the service. The service then moves to the Suspended status, and the Terminate a backup service link is no longer offered for it.
During the reactivation window
- Restore: open the console of your VBR as usual and restore from the points that are still available (see Backing up and restoring from the VBR console).
- Lost password: the VBR password reset remains available (see Resetting the password of your VBR).
- Track the deadline: a banner on the dashboard shows the deactivated service and the number of days before its backup data is deleted.
Reactivating a service
To reactivate a service during the 35-day window, contact OVHcloud support from the OVHcloud Console, giving the name of the infrastructure concerned. Support reactivates the service for you.
Reactivation cancels the termination: the service returns to its previous state, its backup jobs resume, and the restore points that are still available are kept until the end of their retention. This is not a new order.
Billing resumes with the backups that follow the reactivation: each machine backed up is billed for the whole period, without proration. An email confirms the reactivation.
At the end of the window
On the day the window ends without a reactivation, you receive an email. The service can no longer be reactivated, access to the VBR is closed and your backup data is permanently deleted. No backup is available any more, whatever your Backup plan.
To protect this infrastructure again, place a new order.
Automatic termination of a service that was never used
This termination is different from the one you request yourself: it applies to a delivered service in which no virtual machine was ever protected.
- Three days after delivery, you receive a reminder email if no machine is protected.
- Ten days after delivery, a second reminder tells you the termination date of your service.
- Thirty days after delivery, if no machine is protected, the service is terminated automatically. You receive an email that confirms it.
Since no backup was made, no data is lost and nothing is billed. For 35 days, you keep access to your VBR and the service can be reactivated by OVHcloud support.
After that, the service and your VBR are deleted: to protect your infrastructure again, place a new order.
You can then choose your virtual machines at order time, or set a tag on them in vSphere as soon as you receive your access details.
To avoid this termination, protect at least one virtual machine before the deadline (see Protecting your virtual machines).
